At a time when global economies, health systems and national infrastructures are being severely strained, women are often forgotten by the policy-makers who are directing the response. That is the stark warning from UN Women’s Head of Humanitarian Action, Funmi Balogun, in this video.
While many women are working on the frontlines of the pandemic, or suffering the economic impact of losing their jobs, they are also bearing much of the burden at home.
Earlier this month, the UN Secretary-General highlighted that women and girls were “bearing the brunt of the massive social and economic impact of the pandemic.”
Today Funmi Balogun reminds us of the importance of making sure that women are considered in the pandemic response and calls on us to recognize the incredible contribution of women to the economy and society.
